The first official trailer has been released for James Franco’s As I Lay Dying adaptation. The film will premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
It looks interesting and unexpected.
And yet, the skeptic/elitist in me thinks that a film adaptation of a book of that caliber can only serve to tarnish said book’s legacy. If the film is actually good, few people who have also read As I Lay Dying are going to think, “Wow, that story is more interesting/better than I thought!” It’s more likely that the film will be inadequate, and will be a mediocre tagalong forever linked to the book. It’s also more likely that the film will succeed commercially because of its cast (Danny McBride with his cult-like following and of course there’s the auteur himself, James Franco) and the rest of us will be wondering what the point of adapting this novel was.
But maybe that’s just me.
The giggle hit of the summer!
Matt, it’s obviously a comic parody. Franco’s only doing it for the yucks. I for one can’t wait to have my funny bone tickled when some buck-tooth kid declares, “My mother is a FISH!”
